The chemical molluscicides, such as metaldehyde, nicolsamide, sodium pentachlorophenate, nicotinanilide, and bromoacetamide, have been in use since the 1950s. However, the market is shifting towards more natural and less toxic products formulation like Ferric Phosphate. More than 50 plant species have been confirmed to contain components with molluscicidal activity against species like O. hupensis. The Giant African land snail Achatina fulica is one of the most serious land snail pest spread all across the region. Currently control of snail and slugs is heavily dependent on synthetic pesticides i.e. molluscicide which are most convenient method for controlling terrestrial gastropod. Niclosamide and Nicotinanilide are particularly useful to Lymnaea luteola snails as they are toxic to all stages of the snail.

With the rising crop losses due to slugs and snails farmers are inclined to use molluscicides. Molluscicides cannot be substituted by other insecticides and, therefore, form a separate product market. Changes in the management of crops (such as minimum tillage, direct drilling, and high organic matter build up in the soil) have led to increased population densities of slugs and snails, further exacerbating this problem and resulting in more extensive and severe damage to crops. Current chemical methods for controlling slugs and snails are mostly based on metaldehyde, ferric phosphate, methiocarb or thiodicarb. Methiocarb and thiodicarb are carbamate compounds, and are highly toxic to mammals. Since they are insecticides, their use in slug control can also harm beneficial insects present nearby. Metaldehyde and ferric phosphate are less toxic to beneficial organisms, but are also less efficacious for gastropod control.

Metaldehyde forms the largest market segment with XX% of the total molluscicides market share followed by Niclosamide (XX %), ferric phosphate (XX %), Methiocarb (XX %) other bio-based molluscicides (XX %). By application type molluscicides market have been segmented into grains and cereals, oilseeds, fruits and vegetables, ornamentals and others.
