When an AC motor starts gaining its full speed with full voltage connection, it produces high torque for the motor. This high torque can shock the attached electrical equipment and possibly damage it. Soft starters  are used in this situation to regulate the current and torque. Soft Starter is a power electronics device that is used to slowly increase the current so that the motor reaches a steady state. Similarly, the sudden stoppage of power can damage the motor so the soft starter can also gradually decrease the power so the motor does not stop all of a sudden. So soft starter reduces the stress on the motor during initial starting or stopping a  process.

Soft starters are used in pumps, fans, conveyors, and compressors. These are mostly used in chemical, and petro-chemical industries. In  other industries such as pulp and paper where a continuous operation produces huge rims of material this product is essential. Since sudden start or stop can affect the synchronization of multiple connected machines. Also in waste water industries, soft starters are used to control the operation of pumps.

Industrial applications in factories employ motors, conveyors, pumps, compressors etc. these equipment share a common attribute i.e. huge power consumption during starting. The power consumption during starting can reach up to six times the normal power requirement of the instrument. So due to this huge load both the machine and electrical system at the plant become susceptible to damage. Soft starters increase the current and torque level of the motor in a  measured manner so that the power consumption is lower. Since soft starters operate at high power factor and adjust the load reaching the motor, its use leads to less strain on it. Hence by using soft starter the lifetime of the motor is increased. Soft starters due to adequate power management avoid additional demand for power during starting of the motor and in this process manage the power demand and reduce its additional demand. Variable frequency drive (VFD) are considered as a substitute for soft starters. In terms of performance variable frequency drives have much greater range of operations and for this reason VFDs are preferred in wide range of operations. In low voltage segments it is the VFD that scores over the soft starter. So for appliances using low voltage tend to prefer VFD over soft sarter.

Soft starter consists of several parts. This includes, electric motor, controller, operator interface and drive controller. SOFT starters can also be divided as per current use as less than 100KW and more than 100KW types. These can also be categorized as medium voltage type and low voltage type. Out of these tow the medium voltage soft starter is most popular and used in oil and chemicals domain.    

In places where the frequency of voltage and current level varies frequently, there is increased danger to the motor and connected machines as they can start and stop anytime which damages and reduces the life of the motor. Whereas by using soft starters, the initial jolt is smoothed as per the motor capacity. In case where the moor load is suddenly increased there is danger to the soft starters. In cases where there is belt slippages the motor can suddenly increases its load which will damage the soft starter. Soft starters use a function known as star-delta function for three phase motors which are used for industrial operations. The benefit of this is that the starting current and torque are adjusted to about 25% and 30% of the load that a motor would have experienced otherwise. Screw compressors and conveyors require a different set of initial load features than other equipment. It is possible with soft starters to provide adjustable acceleration based on machine type. For heavy industrial uses the common advice that is followed is to install a soft starter with one higher rating than the motor itself. For heavy equipment that take long time to be stable or that experience high frequency of power failures, soft starters can provide improved operating efficiency.
