Solar power window as its name suggests is a novel approach to utilize the existing window or large glass structures. A special coating made of the organic elements is applied on the outer surface of the glass window. This coating serves as a photo voltaic (PV) cell which can generate electricity.

The applications, of solar power window includes many sectors i.e. residence, automobile, commercial. Basically anywhere there is a window that is exposed to sunlight can work as a solar PV generator. Since the need for power extends to all domains then the people from all walks of life can use this applications.

The biggest driver for traditional solar PV cells is that their installation over empty parcels of land or rooftop devoid their further use. In the times of astronomical real estate costs going for window solar PV cells is saving of land acquisition costs. The electricity generation from already installed windows is just additional profit. Also newer technologies have ensured faster return on capital,      which acts as an additional driver for bio based organic solar windows. However there are some restraints that hinder the growth of this market. First these window based solar power generators are not as efficient power generators as conventional photo voltaic cells. So it to generate same amount of power more installations have to be made. Another restraint is that, this is a niche technology and the producing companies have not reached the scale or reach that they should have to cater to wider customer base around the world.

Window Solar Cells, are available in different configurations. The earlier models are the colored cells which when applied to the window can generate electricity. However they leave a particular shade of color on the surroundings. The latest model, transparent luminescent solar concentrator (TLSC) is the fully transparent one and there are no issues associated with the shade. The other option is the least cost option that has strips of traditional PV cells placed between glass sheets as sandwich. But the placement is such that it does not affect the view from the window.

The biggest opportunity in this effort is to reduce carbon footprint by going for nonpolluting sources. Also as against the older PV cells that required direct solar exposure, the new technology has no such limitations. It can be placed in any direction and can operate even without direct sun light.   Another opportunity is to utilize preexisting glass structures at no additional cost of creating a base. Several challenges remain for this product. First is the high cost for an average customer for the installation of window solar project. Because unless the price is reduced the technology cannot attract sufficient market for this technology. Next constraint is the need for repair and maintenance which is bound to occur for any device. A customer might not invest money for a technology for which he is unsure to find quick service facilities.

With this development, the skylines and homes can generate their own power which will ultimately increase the sustainability of the planet as a whole. Now what is required is support from government that incentivize this development and people as well corporate to show sufficient faith in a new development.
