Introduction

Cells that produce electricity using chemical energy in a fuel through electrochemical reaction are referred as fuel cells. Hydrogen in a fuel reacts with oxidizing agents such as oxygen to conduct electrochemical reaction and produce DC power. Many types of fuel cells are commercially available which includes, Alkaline fuel cell (AFC), Solid Acid Fuel Cell (SAFC), Phosphoric Acid Fuel Cell (PAFC), Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFCs), Electric Storage Fuel Cells and High Temperature Fuel Cells.
Defense industry is widely adopting fuel cells mainly as a power source for comms, computer C4IS gear and GPS. Considering the limited availability of petroleum and thereby complications associated with international trade is resulting in decrease dependency on petroleum and increase use of hydrogen-based economy.

Market Dynamics

Increasing dependency on hydrogen based economy is primarily boosting the adoption of fuel cells in defense. In addition, fuel cells significantly reduce the weight and size burden on soldiers and provides reliable power source. Thus, the adoption of fuel cell in the military application is expected to increase significantly with remarkable replacement of conventionally used petroleum powered equipment. Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFCs) and solid oxide fuel cell are preferred over other types of the products available in the market. On the other hand, hazards associated with hydrogen storage is posing a challenge for the adoption of these cells in military use.
