Natural gas liquids (NGLs) are hydrocarbons, in the same family of molecules as natural gas and crude oil, composed exclusively of carbon and hydrogen. Ethane, propane, butane, isobutene, and pentane are all NGLs. Natural gas liquids are used as inputs for petrochemical plants, burned for space heat and cooking, and blended into vehicle fuel. Natural gas liquids are liquid at ambient temperatures, where LNG is only liquid when chilled cryogenically.

Market Drivers

The global natural gas liquids market is rising with no doubts but challenges with NGLs is they are expensive to handle, store and transport compared to refined products. Natural gas liquids require high pressure and/or low temperature to be maintained in their liquid state for shipment and handling, they are highly flammable. This necessitates the use of special trucks, ships and storage tanks which is adding to the cost of natural gas liquids in the market. Oil and natural gas producers are increasingly targeting liquids-rich parts of supply basins due to higher crude oil prices, which is influencing the value of NGL globally.
