Latest Podcasting Market Trends (2026)
Video becomes the default podcast format
Podcasts are now as much watched as heard. According to Edison Research's Infinite Dial 2026, 57% of Americans aged 12+ have both listened to and watched a podcast, the first time a majority has done so. Creators are filming studio-quality shows by default, and video clips on social platforms have become the main way new audiences discover podcasts.
Netflix enters the podcast business
In October 2025, Netflix and Spotify announced a partnership to stream full video versions of top Spotify Studios and The Ringer shows on Netflix, launching in the U.S. in early 2026 across sports, culture and true crime. The move brings podcasts to the TV screen and puts streaming platforms in direct competition for podcast talent and audiences.
YouTube is the largest podcast platform
YouTube reported more than 1 billion monthly active podcast viewers in early 2025, making it the biggest destination for podcast consumption worldwide. Its scale is pushing audio-first platforms to invest heavily in video features, creator payouts and discovery tools.
Advertising growth accelerates
The IAB forecasts U.S. podcast ad spending to grow 9.6% in 2026, faster than the 7.9% estimated for 2025 and well ahead of other digital audio. Better measurement, programmatic buying and video inventory are drawing more brand budgets into podcasts.
Older and wider audiences tune in
Podcast reach is broadening beyond younger listeners. Edison Research found monthly podcast consumption among U.S. adults aged 55+ rose from 38% to 58% in a year, and a record 80% of Americans aged 12+ have now listened to or watched a podcast.
AI reshapes production and localization
AI tools now handle editing, transcription, show notes, clipping and translation, lowering the cost of producing professional shows. AI voice dubbing lets creators release episodes in multiple languages, helping podcasts reach fast-growing non-English audiences in Asia Pacific and Latin America.
Podcasting Market Dynamics
Growth drivers
- Rapid growth of video podcasts on YouTube, Spotify and now Netflix
- Rising podcast advertising, sponsorship and branded-content budgets
- Widespread smartphones, smart speakers, connected cars and smart TVs
- Low-cost creation tools and AI that make professional production accessible to anyone
- Growing demand for on-demand, niche and multilingual content
Restraints and challenges
- Crowded market that makes discovery difficult for new creators

- Rising production costs for video and competition for top talent
- Dependence on a few dominant platforms for distribution and monetization
Monetization models
Podcasters earn revenue through host-read and programmatic ads, sponsorships, premium subscriptions, platform licensing deals, live events and merchandise. Video distribution on YouTube and Netflix is adding new revenue streams through platform revenue sharing and licensing.
