Germanium has many types such as germanium ingot, high-purity GeO2 and germanium tetrachloride etc. Germanium tetrachloride is mainly used in fiber optics industry. High-purity GeO2 is generally used in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and health care industry. Germanium ingot, with highest germanium content, is applied into IR optics and electronic and solar industry.
Germanium is an important material with applications in IR optics, fiber optics, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and electronic and solar industry. Fiber optics is the largest consumption field, with consumption amount of 53.4 MT in 2017. IR optics is the second largest consumption field with consumption share of 26.21% in 2017. IR optics also has great market potential in the future with an established CAGR of 2% during 2017-2024.
Currently, germanium is most commonly produced from sphalerite zinc ores but is also known to be extracted from fly ash coal (produced from coal power plants) and some copper ores. There are also companies producing germanium from germanium scrap metal. Germanium ores minerals are distributed in China, Russia and USA etc. China has the largest reservation. So, China is the largest production region. In 2017, China produced about 104.2 tonne, accounting for 65.23% of global total production.
Global major suppliers are Yunnan Germanium, Umicore, Yunnan Chihong Zn & Ge, Teck, Zhonghao Technology, AXT Inc, JSC Germanium, Shenzhen Zhongjin Lingnan, PPM Pure Metals, Sihuan Zinc & Germanium, Indium Corporation, GEAPP and Photonic Sense. Most of those suppliers are based in China. During them, Yunnan Germanium is the market leader with production share of 25.24%.
During past five years, global consumption varied from 213 tonne to 159.7 tonne in 2017, with a CAGR of -6.94%. Limited by China Environmental pressure, we predict that global demand will increase slightly and global consumption will be 168.6 tonne in 2024.
